Model is Sarah R. 6x8" One-of-a-kind ambrotype on opaque black glass, mounted in permanent oak box with ebony keyed corners. All work including glass cutting, chemistry, photography, box-building and finishing by Marcus Ranum. You can make all the digital prints you like from the scan of the plate, but there is only and ever will only be one glass plate carrying this image.

For more information on ambrotypes wikipedia has a pretty good description of the process here: [link]

I have to say that the ambrotypes you have done call to mind Ellen Von Unwerth's Original Sin series-- and that's a good thing!! There isn't anything so trite as mimicry. I certainly don't mean that. What I have always loved about Von Unwerth's work is the irreverence in presenting the off-color. Photographers like Helmut Newton and Diane Arbus photographed the off-color as well but, in Newton's case it was contrived-- very posed. In Diane Arbus' case we were engaging with the subject. We were looking and they were looking back. Von Unwerth made us voyeurs into this fringed world, and in this series you are doing that. There is no forced effort to present these subjects, they just ARE and we are simply peering through a crack in the wall. I specified Von Unwerth's Original Sin series in particular for the vintage treatment of the film but also the sexuality presented less with that "woman as object" feel and more an emphasis on "sensuality begets sexuality".

I have always really admired your work and I am thrilled to see this variation on your usual studio work. I would love to see you do workshops, then again...I no longer live in PA so...I wouldn't get to come. :(

I'm a little intimidated by the comparison to Unwerth. :) She is way, way, way outside my league. But I really appreciate what you are saying - she does make it look natural, in spite of the fact that it's obviously not. (By the way if you haven't seen "Helmut By June" it's a wonderful documentary about Newton...) What I am trying to do is create images that don't really "say" anything as much as they present a situation and let the viewer's mind tell a story from there. It's really fun for me. :)

If you're ever back in PA, let me know! I travel a lot so I can't ever be sure I'll be home, but you're welcome to visit.

Just collecting all the necessary chemicals was painful and cost a lot. Then you need a camera that can handle wet plate (usually an 8x10 or 5x7) plus optics and whatnot. It's not cheap. But once you're geared up, you're printing on glass, which is cheaper than paper.

Awesome stuff! I want it!
Just created an eBay account just to bid on this. Having problems though... :-|
Kept saying I got outbid as soon as I bid. And then... I looked... and I had 4 bids in a row! =P :O

What happens is that when someone bids it raises the bid level of the other bidders up to as high as they are willing to go.

Suppose there is an item at $10
I want it pretty badly so I bid $100
Ebay will set the high bid at $11 (because that puts my bid ahead of the current $10 but not all the way to as high as I was willing to go)
Now, you come along and bid $50 for it
Ebay will set the high bid to your $50 but then automatically (since I bid $100) raises my bid to $51 to cover it.

It's pretty cool the way Ebay works. The main thing to remember with bidding is (unless you want to get obsessive compulsive about it) bid what you're willing to go and then walk away. If you win, you win. Some people try to sneak in bids at the last minute (they're called 'snipers') but it really doesn't change anything unless someone is bidding less than they are willing to pay.

Thanks for bidding on my artwork! :D
