...because I've been (mostly) not shooting very much, and primarily spending my time doing non-photographic activities.
We left Carlsbad and overnighted in Abilene, TX. As my mom always said, "If you can't say anything nice, it's best say nothing at all..." so, - enough about Abilene. Actually, that's not quite true: there were some absolutely gorgeous landromats - Abiline is ripe with retro laundromats. We'd thought about getting some shots of Sarah wearing the black rubber fetish goddess dress, working the laundromat while I hung out looking like an Art Frahm-like customer. But they all closed at 9:00 and the town looked distinctly like the kind of place where cops don't like weirdos - so we didn't take the chance.
After leaving Abilene we hit Dallas. The traffic in Dallas is an art-form. Such an art-form that I prefer to just put my head under a pillow and try to smother myself, rather than go outside. Sarah did shoots and I read and napped and surfed the web. We went to a very cool museum of asian art (The Crow Collection) one night, and ate some good food. But we were happy to point the car toward New Orleans, and the miles flowed and the caffeine pumped in my veins and we made it to Metairie in short order.

(big) looking for the hotel room
We've been in Metairie for a few days, and did a bit of hiking on some cool bayous, and lots of eating. A trip to the insect museum was kind of a bust - it had been dumbed down for the kids to the point where they practically could have omitted the bugs entirely. Gigantic fiberglass caterpillars just don't stack up to the real, live ones. I don't understand why they didn't show a bit more creativity. The message I came away with is: "kids are stupid and can't handle anything more complex than discovery channel-style spoon-feeding." Ugh. And, worse than horrible, there were large displays of insectile beautifulness labelled "beautiful design." I guess that people in Louisiana can't handle the complex concepts of variance and selection.

(big) clowning around in the hotel room.
Last night we had dinner at Bayona, and stuffed ourselves; the food was good.
Sarah's posing for a photographer right now, and I'm sitting at Starbucks' whacking away at the Mac. Tomorrow, we're going to hit the road north to home - and the weather reports are that there's pretty ugly snow and ice falling from the sky right now. We'll see what happens. Both of us are getting a bit tired of being on the road. I rather cleverly packed my luggage with more clothes for Sarah than for myself and I think that the shirt I am wearing has worn out its welcome.

Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, Austin, El Paso, Lubbock, these are placed better visited as a pedestrian.
Sorry to hear about your misadventures in Abilene.
Albeit, I think anywhere North of Dallas, you gonna find a lot of little cities and towns that are pretty much homogeneous nothing.
Anyway, good luck getting home!
And may never have to burn the shirt you're wearing now.
